As a Chemist, provides technical services in connection with the planning, development, establishment, and monitoring of various process shop procedures. Industrial processes and/or operations for which work requirements are established include, but are not necessarily limited to the following: cleaning, plating, metal surface preparation of aircraft parts and components, bonding of various materials, paint stripping, preparation of the surface prior to welding or heat treatment, processing of anti-friction bearings, painting, and electroless nickel plating and a wide variety of other type process.
Frequently works with other scientists such as chemists, materials engineers providing advice and assistance on special projects which require multidiscipline expertise. Determines the impact of new and rapidly changing process and chemical technology and evaluation changes necessary to constantly meet state-of-the-art technology requirements for a full range of variety chemicals and complex chemical processes. Characteristically, these changes involve environmental and chemical issues of a conflicting or obscure nature in which much of the technical references are not directly applicable. The approach to resolving these issues includes pilot or field testing of the process or chemical change, evaluating and interpreting the test results, and modifying the appropriate existing documents or developing new documents to incorporate applicable changes. Pilot testing and process monitoring requires use of highly sophisticated computerized instrumentation such as x-ray diffraction, infrared spectrophotometer, UV/ Visible Spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatography, Microscopes, Ion Chromatography, BPL Chromatography, Carbon / Sulfur Analyzer, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, and Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer. These processes are used on the assigned CCAD workload, as well as other assigned workloads of various contractors. Establishing such work requirements and processes that are essential to ensure acceptable quality of end items, which contribute to the overall mission of the depot. Applies professional knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of chemistry, together with an intensive understanding of and familiarity with the chemical requirements of materials particularly related to aircraft, materials, and processes to perform the full range of duties related to chemical evaluations and process methodology development and maintenance. Independently plans, organizes, and conducts investigations and research in the development of local process specifications and work requirements for the full range of a variety of chemicals and complex chemical processes used or required in the overhaul, repair, maintenance, and/or modification of aircraft, aircraft power plants, components, parts, and accessories thereof. Incumbent determines the nature and scope of technical information required, visits work site, obtains data, and analyzes requirements for the process. The incumbent initiates project descriptions and specification. These are used by the affected production shop personnel and to on-site contractor personnel. Contractors have an assigned workload of aircraft, aircraft power plants, components, parts, and accessories to repair, overhaul, and maintain. Translates requirements in terms of properties, uses, and behavior characteristics of these chemicals uses in or during processing of these aircraft items under a wide variety of conditions to establish realistic work requirements and processes. Analyzes and investigates industrial shop chemical processes, tests chemical materials and operational requirements as they pertain to aircraft overhaul processes. Provides chemical technical expertise during investigation of in-house component failures and Quality Deficiency Requests. This includes determining the specific data needed, the approach needed to secure this data, development and adaptation of necessary procedures, prototyping, evaluation, and interpretation of results. Services include the analysis, identification, characterization, testing, and evaluation of various materials and substances such as ceramics, composites, greases, oils, solvents, adhesives, hazardous wastes, asbestos, engine residues, paint flakes, plastic, rubber, etc. to assure conformance to specification and serviceability of incoming and in storage production materials, and facilitate the determination of cause process in the analysis of processing problems on the production floor. As an authority in the field of chemistry, provides training to technicians and lower-level engineers in the details of chemical technology. Conducts briefings pertinent to various programs and new program changes brought about by new directives, constraints, etc. Serves as the Division's representative at meetings, conferences and /or seminars responsible for recommending solutions or resolving process problems related to aerospace materials and processes as related to rotary / fixed wing aircraft and aerospace systems. Visits contractor plants, or other Army and DoD elements such as depots to discuss new aerospace technologies and processes applicable to the depot. Environment and Physical Demands Performs in an office setting, however, the work requires regular visits to the process shops or test areas with high noise levels, eye hazards, chemical hazards, and other possible hazards may be present. Wears appropriate safety gear and clothing, e.g., safety glasses, respirator, apron, etc. as prescribed by safety directives. Regular visits to process shops require extended periods of walking, bending, and standing, e.g., when testing and monitoring processes, conducting investigations, examining materials, etc. May require some lifting of moderately heavy items weighing 20 pounds or less.
